The project was born of an outraged observation by Jean-Marc Dalpé, a Franco-Ontarian author and translator: the Francophones of America do not recognize themselves in the Franco-French translations of Jack Kerouac’s work—which he originally wanted to write in his native French-Canadian language. Dalpé felt a strong urge to restore the original territorial authenticity of Kerouac’s voice.
He gathered around him a team of artists, including Guillaume Martel LaSalle, co-director of Possibles Éditions. Together they imagined a two-part event consisting of a participatory translation workshop and a cabaret. The Workshop section invites you to write your own translation of a passage from Kerouac’s work. All the necessary equipment is at your disposal: stationery, typists, and a real printing press.
Then it’s time for the Cabaret! In a festive and relaxed atmosphere, several Quebec City artists from various disciplines will present literary, theatrical and musical numbers created specifically for the occasion from their personal view of the mythical work of the great Jack—whether it be admiring, mocking, dreamy, emotional or critical. The menu is renewed every evening. Very promising!
