Gurshad Shaheman (France | Maubeuge & Iran)
Three women, born in Iran in the early 1960s, three university students who were suddenly in the midst of the islamic revolution of 1979, three testimonies of resilience and hope. Gurshad Shaheman honors his mother and his two aunts in a journey through 50 years of history, pain and joys. Mixing familial testimonies and a portrait of Iranian politics, the author welcomes the audience on the stage, right next to the performers and the actual members of his family. While sipping hot tea, we are invited into this snippet of culture, a determining part of the Middle East’s history and mostly, a rare access to the voice of these women, too often repressed.
When we sat down for some tea during Les Forteresses, we were not expecting this heart-wrenching journey. In addition to these migration stories, sometimes funny, but mostly shattering, it is these women’s resilience – these aunts, theses mothers – and their visible joy to be among us on stage that completes this work of art from Gurshad Shaheman. It is a powerful stance on the incredible dignity of humans, in this ever-changing world.
