Crazy Smooth (Canada | Montréal)
Growing old is certainly not easy for anyone, but for dance artists—especially those who practise urban or street dance—it is a feat that borders on the heroic. The body is stressed to the extreme, with injuries and limitations accumulating over the years. This practice is closely associated with youth, vigour and agility, and few are the brave who persist beyond middle age…
Dancer-choreographer Crazy Smooth—whose real name is Yvon Soglo—has gathered nine ‘’b-girls“ and ‘’b-boys”, ranging in age from 20 to 60, to create a show inspired by their personal stories of resilience and vulnerability, of triumphs and defeats. In My Body aims to celebrate the authenticity of breakdancing and pay tribute to the love and solidarity that unites this community.
The ensemble offers a breathtaking performance delivered by a brilliant, committed and virtuoso intergenerational cast, which unfolds in a space sculpted by admirably inventive lights and projections. Through ensemble numbers, duets and solos as well as confidences and interviews, bodies and hearts sometimes exult in the joy of dancing and sometimes express pain in a very moving way.
