The Hamartia Trilogy is composed of three short solo pieces performed by author Jaha Koo, a South Korean multidisciplinary artist based in Belgium. The word hamartia derives from Greek tragedy and refers to a hero’s flaw or defect that leads to their downfall. The shows form one single whole but can be enjoyed independently in no chronological order.
The exceptionally inventive theatre of the trilogy is inspired by documentaries, history and autobiography. These three gems sparkle with humour and poetry, combining technological precision, tender words, a sharp yet compassionate social critique and a profound humanity.
The History of Korean Western Theatre digs into the issue of the Westernization of modern Korean theatre, which just celebrated its 100th anniversary. In today’s Korean theatre scene, Korean playwrights are often sidelined in favour of Western writers like Shakespeare and Molière. The dominant global culture has smothered traditional local expression, preventing national theatre from flourishing. In a stunningly beautiful poetic and visual meditation on memory and forgetting, the artist engages in a dialogue with the memory of his grandmother, an origami toad and a Cuckoo named Seri, which has developed a taste for touring and the stage…
