A three-part presentation of the archives of the show Cabaret Neiges noires<\/em>. This play, as festive as it was outrageous, which at the time brought together a lively group of performers and a handful of musicians, had a bombshell effect on audiences. Those who were there still remember it, and those who missed it are left to live with their regrets\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, a relay-style lecture presented by the Acting students in the History class of the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, a staged reading of several key scenes from the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, a roundtable discussion with some of the creators of the play, moderated by Alexandre Cadieux of the CEAD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cabaret neiges noires<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n

Created in Montreal at Th\u00e9\u00e2tre La Licorne in November 1992, Cabaret Neiges noires<\/em> was the result of a co-production between Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de La Manufacture and Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Il va sans dire. Written collaboratively by Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Caron, Dominic Champagne, Jean-Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Messier, and Pascale Rafie, the show was directed by Dominic Champagne. During its run in Quebec City as part of the Carrefour international de th\u00e9\u00e2tre, the production was staged at the now-defunct Le D\u2019Auteuil bar venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA scathing satire on the meaning of life, the assassination of Martin Luther King, urban solitude, the wandering of Claude Jutra, romantic passion, and many other sources of distress, this exhilarating tragicomedy epic gleefully combines the merciless songs of the \u2018Joyeux Troubadours\u2019 with Maria Casar\u00e8s\u2019s full striptease, the death of Jacques Brel at the bottom of a barrel of Jack Daniel\u2019s, and the FLQ Manifesto.\u201d \u2014 Cabaret Neiges noires, CEAD<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This production, widely compared to L\u2019Osstidcho <\/em>and described\u2014rightly or wrongly\u2014as \u201cthe manifesto of Generation X,\u201d stands among the landmark shows of the 1990s. As Cabaret Neiges noires<\/em> recently marked the 30th anniversary of its creation, we believe that historical distance now allows us to revisit this bold artistic statement with a fresh perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
